What problems can occur after dental implant surgery?

 

Although dental implant surgery has a high success rate, it is not suitable for everyone. It also has the potential to cause long-term complications and failure.


Although success rate is about 90 to 95 percent, some patients can develop biological complications due to pre-exciting medical conditions.


The potential complications from surgery includes:

 

Gum recession


In some cases, a person may find that the gum tissue around the implant begins to recede. This can lead to inflammation and pain. Getting a prompt assessment from a dentist is essential to prevent the removal of the implant.

 

Loose implant


In the first few weeks following surgery, the dental implant will grow and fuse with the jawbone. This process is called osseointegration, and it is crucial to the long-term success of the implant. This process can take many months.


If the implant fails to fuse with the bone, the dental surgeon may remove it. A person may be able to reattempt the implant procedure once the area has healed.

 

Nerve or tissue damage


Sometimes, a dental surgeon may inadvertently place a dental implant too close to a nerve. This can cause numbness, tingling, or pain. Short-term symptoms are most common in dental implant surgery, but a person may experience long-term symptoms.


A nerve or tissue problem requires immediate attention. Injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in the lower jaw can be potentially serious. Some possible symptoms of an IAN injury include:


•    persistent numbness on the side of the implant, including the lower lip and chin

•    persistent pain or discomfort

•    tingling, tickling, or burning sensations in the gums and skin

 

Damage from excessive force


As with any tooth, excessive force or impact can cause a dental implant to crack or become loose.


Some people may apply excessive force to dental implants without even realizing it. For example, some people grind, or brux their teeth while sleeping. People who are prone to this behavior may need to wear a mouthguard to prevent damage to the implant as well as their natural teeth.

The LAPIP procedure is much the same as LANAP. LAPIP stands for Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Protocol and is used to treat gum disease in patients who have dental implants. The procedure is very similar to LANAP; only special considerations are made when working next to the dental implant.

Sinus Lift Elevation Techniques for Implant Site Development

Why do I need a sinus lift?

A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that is performed when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw to place dental implants. The maxillary sinuses are located above the upper back teeth and can limit the amount of bone available for dental implant placement.

There are several reasons why a patient may need a sinus lift:

Natural bone loss: The maxillary sinuses can expand as we age, leading to natural bone loss in the upper jaw.

Tooth loss: When a tooth is lost, the bone that once supported it will begin to shrink and resorb.

Previous extractions: If a patient has had multiple teeth extracted in the upper jaw, there may not be enough bone left to support dental implants.

Congenital conditions: Some patients may have congenital conditions that affect the development of the jaw bone.

The sinus lift procedure is done to add bone to the area, the bone is usually taken from the patient’s hip or from a bone bank. The sinus membrane is then lifted and the bone is placed under it. The bone will then integrate with the existing bone over a period of several months, creating a solid base for dental implants.

It’s important to keep in mind that not everyone who is getting dental implants needs a sinus lift, your dentist or oral surgeon will be able to determine if it’s necessary for you. Also, a sinus lift is a surgical procedure, so it’s important to be aware of the risks and benefits before making a decision.

What Are Grafts?

Gum grafts are a minimally invasive surgery that can help treat gum recession; a symptom of gum disease where the gums pull back and recede from teeth, exposing the tooth roots. Gum grafts involve taking soft tissue from another part of the mouth or using a product from a tissue bank (Alloderm)  to correct the receding gums. We are also Pinhole Certified. We also offer a number of regenerative treatment options for patients experiencing bone loss such as bone grafts, biocompatible membranes, and biomimetic material implants to help protect your jawbone, prevent bone loss, and regenerate the jaw. LANAP = Laser Assisted Regeneration (LAR)

An FDA-cleared laser treatment called the LANAP protocol offers a less painful, more successful treatment alternative to conventional surgery. LANAP=LAR is the only scientifically, research proven methodology that results in true periodontal regeneration, new bone growth and gum tissue reattachment. LANAP and LAR is accomplished with the PerioLase MVP-7. It is a free-running, variable pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The 7 variable pulse durations can be thought of as “different lasers” in one device as they have discrete and discriminating tissue interactions. The LANAP=LAR treatment is one of the most successful protocols in treating gum disease because it can target the source of the inflammation without hurting or removing any healthy gum tissue, slow or stop attachment loss and decrease pocket depth, and allowing the body to recover from the chronic infection without the need for scalpel or sutures.

You can’t change physics! The success of the LANAP protocol is rooted in laser physics and the unique interaction between the tissue in the mouth and the variable pulsed wavelength of the PerioLase MVP-7 1064 Nd:YAG dental laser.

The 1064 wavelength passes through water and hydroxyapatite; but is absorbed in melanin and hemoglobin. Simply put – the wavelength targets the diseased tissue without harming healthy tissue. The laser light penetrates 4mm beyond the tissue surface for effective bacteria kill. Once the site is clean; the laser interacts with the hemoglobin to create a stable fibrin clot.

How Does LANAP & LAPIP Work?

 

Both LANAP and LAPIP are treatments for periodontal, or gum disease. Gum disease occurs in over 80% of the United States population, and if not treated, can lead to bone, gum and tooth loss. LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure and is performed by a specially trained periodontist like Dr. Ramos. During LANAP procedures, your periodontist will use a laser, less than three human hairs thick to remove any bacteria and diseased tissue next to your gums and teeth. Once all of the damaged bone and tissue is removed, Dr. Ramos will eliminate any calculus that remains on the tooth. Now that the area is free of bacteria and diseased tissue, Dr. Ramos will go back in again with the laser and use it to create a new healthy region of tissue. This new layer will be sealed off naturally and be a perfect space for new healthy tissue to grow and flourish, free of bacteria and disease.
